A thermodynamically consistent nonlocal formulation for damaging materials
2002
A thermodynamically consistent nonlocal formulation for damaging materials is presented. The second principle of thermodynamics is enforced in a nonlocal form over the volume where the dissipative mechanism takes place. The nonlocal forces thermodynamically conjugated are obtained consistently from the free energy. The paper indeed extends to elastic damaging materials a formulation originally proposed by Polizzotto et al. for nonlocal plasticity. Constitutive and computational aspects of the model are discussed. The damage consistency conditions turn out to be formulated as an integral complementarity problem and, consequently, after discretization, as a linear complementarity problem. A n…
Minimum contrast for point processes' first-order intensity estimation
2023
In this paper, we exploit some theoretical results, from which we know the expected value of the K-function weighted by the true first-order intensity function of a point pattern. This theoretical result can serve as an estimation method for obtaining the parameter estimates of a specific model, assumed for the data. The only requirement is the knowledge of the first-order intensity function expression, completely avoiding writing the likelihood, which is often complex to deal with in point process models. We illustrate the method through simulation studies for spatio-temporal point processes.
Long-range cohesive interactions of non-local continuum faced by fractional calculus
2008
Abstract A non-local continuum model including long-range forces between non-adjacent volume elements has been studied in this paper. The proposed continuum model has been obtained as limit case of two fully equivalent mechanical models: (i) A volume element model including contact forces between adjacent volumes as well as long-range interactions, distance decaying, between non-adjacent elements. (ii) A discrete point-spring model with local springs between adjacent points and non-local springs with distance-decaying stiffness connecting non-adjacent points. Under the assumption of fractional distance-decaying interactions between non-adjacent elements a fractional differential equation in…
A non-local model of fractional heat conduction in rigid bodies
2011
In recent years several applications of fractional differential calculus have been proposed in physics, chemistry as well as in engineering fields. Fractional order integrals and derivatives extend the well-known definitions of integer-order primitives and derivatives of the ordinary differential calculus to real-order operators. Engineering applications of fractional operators spread from viscoelastic models, stochastic dynamics as well as with thermoelasticity. In this latter field one of the main actractives of fractional operators is their capability to interpolate between the heat flux and its time-rate of change, that is related to the well-known second sound effect. In other recent s…
A Fractional Approach to Non-Newtonian Blood Rheology in Capillary Vessels
2019
In small arterial vessels, fluid mechanics involving linear viscous fluid does not reproduce experimental results that correspond to non-parabolic profiles of velocity across the vessel diameter. In this paper, an alternative approach is pursued introducing long-range interactions that describe the interactions of non-adjacent fluid volume elements due to the presence of red blood cells and other dispersed cells in plasma. These non-local forces are defined as linearly dependent on the product of the volumes of the considered elements and on their relative velocity. Moreover, as the distance between two volume elements increases, the non-local forces decay with a material distance-decaying …
Local Spatio-Temporal Log-Gaussian Cox Processes for seismic data analysis
2022
We propose a local version of the spatio-temporal log-Gaussian Cox processes (LGCPs) employing the Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions into the minimum contrast procedure to obtain space as well as time-varying parameters. We resort to the joint minimum contrast method fitting method to estimate the set of second-order parameters for the class of Spatio-Temporal LGCPs. We employ the proposed methodology to analyse real seismic data occurred Greece between 2004 and 2015.
Locally weighted spatio-temporal minimum contrast for Log-Gaussian Cox Processes
This approach has the advantage of being usable in the case of both separable and non-separable parametric specifications of the correlation function of the underlying Gaussian Random Field (GRF).
The carrying capacity for Mediterranean bivalve suspension feeders: evidence from analysis of food availability and hydrodynamics and their integrati…
2004
Abstract In order to assess the carrying capacity of two Mediterranean areas, the Incze et al. model and its modification were applied. Our measures were carried out in the Gulf of Gaeta (Central MED), where mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis ) are intensively cultivated (production of approximately 200 t per year) and the Gulf of Castellammare (Southern MED), where bivalve culture is not widely practised. Velocities of water current and in field filtration rates were measured in each area. Total suspended matter (TSM), suspended chlorophyll-a (CHLa), lipid, protein and carbohydrate concentrations in the particulate were measured seasonally and used as tools to evaluate the trophic status …
Locally weighted minimum contrast estimation for spatio-temporal log-Gaussian Cox processes
2023
A local version of spatio-temporal log-Gaussian Cox processes is proposed by using Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions plugged into the minimum contrast procedure, to obtain space as well as time-varying parameters. The new procedure resorts to the joint minimum contrast fitting method to estimate the set of second-order parameters. This approach has the advantage of being suitable in both separable and non-separable parametric specifications of the correlation function of the underlying Gaussian Random Field. Simulation studies to assess the performance of the proposed fitting procedure are presented, and an application to seismic spatio-temporal point pattern…
Robustness, Stability, and Fidelity of Explanations for a Deep Skin Cancer Classification Model
2022
Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent of all cancers. Because of its being widespread and externally observable, there is a potential that machine learning models integrated into artificial intelligence systems will allow self-screening and automatic analysis in the future. Especially, the recent success of various deep machine learning models shows promise that, in the future, patients could self-analyse their external signs of skin cancer by uploading pictures of these signs to an artificial intelligence system, which runs such a deep learning model and returns the classification results. However, both patients and dermatologists, who might use such a system to aid their work, need to …
